How to: Experience golf at the base of Mt. Fuji, Shizuoka Japan

Just a little over an hour from the bustling Tokyo city life lies a valley abundant with natural hot springs, wide-open countryside and 20 amazing golf courses. The Gotemba and Oyama valley in Shizuoka Prefecture is home to the southern half of Mt. Fuji and easily accessible from Tokyo by car or train. This resort rich area has undoubtedly the best views of the famous mountain that you’ll find anywhere in Japan. The land gently sloping away from Mt. Fuji beckoned for golf course construction. Japan's budding resort and golf industry stepped up with the best domestic and the world's most famous course designers to accentuate this spectacular and memorable scenery. Match this with numerous natural hot springs, the unique culture and fine local cuisine and you’ve got a must experience new golf destination.

The Gotemba - Mt. Fuji Samurai

7 Day - 6 night

5 round + Experience

Day 1

Exit the direct train (Asagiri Romance car) at JR Gotemba station and make your way to your first hotel, the Hotel Clad. It is less than 10 min away by taxi or shuttle. Check in and enjoy a hot spring while taking in the incredible Mt. Fuji views. Dinner is a treat with traditional fresh Japanese fare in the main dining room with various set menu course options. There are also many nearby restaurant options just minutes walk within the Premium Outlets where your hotel is based. Note, these restaurants close quite early, so check with the front desk to confirm times.

Day 2

After a good breakfast transfer to the first course Fuji Oyama Golf Club. Enjoy this pristine club with a gourmet lunch after the front nine followed by the back nine. Suggested activity: After your round why not head to Kirin Fuji Distillery for a distillery tour and tasting! Then transfer back to the Hotel Clad for your second night where another gourmet dinner and private hot springs await! Note, you might want to stop at a convenience store on your way back, if you want some things you can’t get at the hotel.

Fuji Country Club

Day 3

After a good breakfast buffet with eggs done as you like, transfer to the nearby Fuji Country Club. This course is visible from the hotel, but the clubhouse is about 5 minutes drive, so arrange for a shuttle or book a taxi at the front the night before. Fuji Country Club is a traditional course designed by one of Japans most prolific designers of the era, Shiro Akaboshi and was founded way back in 1958. The clubhouse is even a registered cultural building and this course is always impeccably groomed year round! As it’s quite hilly we recommend using a caddy for this round. You can enjoy your round and relax knowing your hotel (Hotel Clad) is just a few hundred yards away their spa and natural hot springs await! We suggest dinner there, or perhaps try walking to one of the restaurants in the nearby Outlets mall on this night for dinner and an activity.

Day 4

Enjoy a great breakfast, check out and transfer to your next course the very impressive Fuji Kokusai Golf Club. Enjoy Mt. Fuji views from this pristine club with a gourmet lunch after the front nine followed by the back nine. Suggested activity: After your round, why not book a Japanese sake tasting plan (by reservation only) with their sommelier right in the clubhouse! Experience professionally selected sake from Shizuoka and other domestic sake producing regions. For dinner, if you like sashimi and yakitori, we recommend trying a local restaurant on this night near JR Gotemba station called Sakanaya! Reservations preferred. Amazing sashimi and a locals favorite restaurant, so it’s usually busy!

Day 5

After a good breakfast check-out and transfer 25min to your next course, Rembrandt Golf Club. A hotel group manages this club, so service here has a different feel compared to other courses. Same drill with morning nine followed by lunch and the back nine. After your round this days next accommodations will be the Rembrandt Premium Fuji Resort. Again you might want to stop at some point on your 20 min transfer to get some supplies as it is a full service hotel, but lacks a good shop for basics. Dinner in the main dining room offers high-end French – Japanese fusion set menus along with quite an extensive wine list to choose from. The Hawaiian themed Spa and massage salon on the 6th floor here, Mina Mahalo, is highly recommended post play activity and a perfect way to loosen those lower back golf related muscles! Please do check out their menu options.

Day 6

Try a morning therapeutic hot springs with a Mt. Fuji view before breakfast and then it’s off to Gotemba Golf Club, just a 17-minute transfer away. Waking up in this iconic hotel with Mt. Fuji views is always a treat! Breakfast awaits in the main dining room and you can get your eggs done as you like along with an extensive buffet, fresh coffee and baked breads. For your enjoyment a caddie is recommended for this round, as Gotemba Golf Club is a challenging course featuring many elevation changes and undulations with hidden areas that like to hide golf balls. Should you be feeling energetic after your round a fun post play activity on this day is either horse back riding at Okamoto stables, just 8 minutes away on route back to your hotel, or try the mountain biking course with state of the art electric power assisted rental bikes.

Amazing Golf near Fuji
Gatsby Golf Club

Day 7

You might select to repeat your morning routine from day 6 then either stay another night here, or check-out. Todays last round is at nearby Gatsby Golf Club a short 14-minute drive away. A motorized cart is included with your round, however you might want to try out their special golf scooters! They are an extra fee, but make the round even more fun as you can zoom right up to your ball every time saving precious energy and increasing the fun!

Access

Getting there: If you are coming in from overseas and a confident driver, you can find car rentals from all International airports in Japan.  And with the modern GPS systems, you will be  zooming around in no time! Or, make your way to Tokyo or Osaka area etc... and catch a train! There are direct trains from Shinjuku station called the Odakyu “Asagiri Romance Car”, that depart at 6:40am, 10:40am and 14:40 and take 93 minutes to Gotemba station. A highway bus can also get you to Gotemba in about an hour and forty-five minutes from Tokyo’s Shinjuku south bus terminal and they depart every 30 minutes throughout the day, starting from 7:00am! Also the bullet train from Tokyo Station offers access to Mishima station directly, however you would then need to transfer twice to reach Gotemba station on local trains making this route somewhat less ideal. Due to this, we recommend starting your golf tour from Shinjuku station and traveling direct to Gotemba station on the Odakyu Asagiri Romance car, then follow our above suggested plan. Note, there are three car rental shops next to Gotemba station including Toyota and Nissan just a 5 minute walk from the Fuji side main exit, of JR Gotemba station
